Exmouth Devon 14th-17th February 2020
Exmouth Devon. 14-17 February 2020
On Friday 14th February 2020 Bill and Val drove down to the Imperial Hotel Exmouth for a long weekend organised by the International Police Association (IPA). On arrival they checked in and later met up with other IPA members mostly from West Country forces though there was another couple from Thames Valley. The problem with the weekend was that Storm Dennis had chosen to arrive at the same time so this limited their choice of activities.
On Saturday they chose to go into Exeter on the bus, at least there would be cover from the atrocious weather. On arrival in Exeter they wandered though the city visiting the cathedral and some shops. They returned to Exmouth and during the short time they were out some of the roads they had travelled in on had flooded but fortunately not impassable. On the short walk from the bus stop in Exmouth town centre to the hotel they got completely soaked, back in their room they changed and warmed up. They then joined the rest of the party for dinner,
Sunday 16th. The weather had improved slightly but still not conducive to wandering around town so they stayed in the hotel until the afternoon when they drove to a nearby national trust property called A la Ronde, an interesting sixteen sided house built that way to get the full benefit of daylight. Unfortunately the building exterior was surrounded by scaffolding enabling roof repairs, this precluded a decent photo but Bill managed to get one of of the stable block. Being in Devon they just had to have a cream tea in the house’s cafe before leaving. They returned to Exmouth and whilst the rain had stopped it was still very windy so a walk along the promenade was out of the question. All the other nearby National Trust properties were closed due to the weather so they returned to the hotel sat in the lounge before joining the others for dinner.
Monday 17th the weather, though still not brilliant, was considerably better so they had an uneventful journey home.
