Hertford 29 August - 7 September
COVID not withstanding Val and Bill are back travelling and the caravan is now out for the second time in a month.
The first full weekend in September is traditionally a Scouting weekend at Gilwell Park, the Scout Association’s HQ. Val and Bill have always supported this event, met up with their scouting friends, Sandra and David Gostling from Norfolk some twenty years ago and have participated in workshops and social activities ever since.
For a few years now the scout authorities have show a disinclination to caravans so the four have chosen to camp at a nearby Camping and Caravan Club site. The great plague of 2020 not only cancelled the Gilwell weekend but their regular site was also closed. With all this in mind it was decided to find another campsite and to participate in the virtual Gilwell. The new site was located on the the edge of Hertford. They say every cloud has a silver lining, not only was the site one of the best they’ve ever been to but it had a Scouting link and there were many references to Baden-Powell.
They each arrived on site, met up and camped on adjacent pitches. With the current situation they decided to stay local and not take any trips into London as in previous years. Consequently much of the time was spent wandering around the nearby picturesque towns of, Hertford, Ware and Hoddeston. This pleased Bill as he is an Imperial War Museum researcher for war memorials. He didn’t realise that such small towns would have so many, so he was in his element.
On Saturday 5th the four campers had their photo taken next to a tree synonymous with Baden-Powell then they sat with their iPads into participate in the virtual event.
On Sunday they revisited Hertford for their “End of Course” meal had another wander around the town before returning to the site and beginning to strike camp.
Monday Val and Bill said their goodbyes to their friends and had a steady drive home, putting the caravan away but hopefully not for the last time this year.
